Materials: approx 128 metres (140 yards) of worsted weight yarn, I used 2 skeins ofDebbie Bliss Alpaca Silk in colour 09; 4 metres (4.4 yards) of ribbon, I used 1″ wide black satin.

Tools:
1 pair 5mm needles; yarn needle; 2 stitch markers; scrap yarn.

Gauge:
16 sts and 24 rows = 10cm (4″) in stocking st.

Work 2 rows in stocking st.
Next row: K2, *yo, k2tog, repeat from * to last 2 sts, k2.

Next row: sl 1, k1, yo, k2tog, k to last 4 sts, ssk, yo, k2.
Next row: sl 1, purl to end.
Next row: sl 1, knit to end.
Cast off knit wise from the WS.
Slip thumb stitches from waste yarn onto needle.
CO 2 sts, k to end.
Next row: CO 2 sts, purl to end.
Slipping first sts of every row work 3 more rows in stocking st.
Cast off knit wise from the WS.

Sew short edges of thumb together and cast on sts of thumb and hand together.

Repeat for left glove reversing gusset increases.

* Note: there is no reason you couldn’t use dpns to knit the thumb in the round. I just didn’t have any handy when I made them.

These need a name, any suggestions?

Ooh, very pretty! I love the colour; the lacing is fab.

Maybe when my wrists get sufficiently better to knit again, I shall make some :)

You GENIUS! I am on a serious post-Christmas yarn diet, but there’s nothing for it — I have to make these instantly. So, I will spend this evening relentlessly frogging my DB alpaca silk neckwarmer and casting these on instead. Thank you for a really gorgeous pattern.

Those are fantastic. And, I’ve got some gorgeous silver stuff in stash for them. With purple ribbon to hand too… Why, thank you for brightening today! They remind me of the corsets my morris side like to wear when we’re off duty, so I shall call mine ‘Espy Gloves’ (http://www.newesp.org.uk)

I love these gloves!!!

Maybe you should give them a name like “Soprano” or “Alto”? I kind of like Alto since it sort of implies rising up (as do the gloves) to me…what do you think? :-)

Those are absolutely gorgeous. The blue of the bloves and the black of the ribbon look marvelouse together, and they looks oh so soft! Excellent job :)

These are superb! My 15 year old daughter was looking over my shoulder when I was admiring these and has asked me to make her a pair. Then I shall make a pair for myself. A job well done ysolda.

Love them! They are going on the needles as I type… well, not simultaneously, but you know what I mean, I think. And the whole time I am knitting them, I can be deciding what ribbon color might go well with a nice shade of cornflower blue. Hmm… The possibilities are endless!

These are awesome. Good job.

As to a name I may have a few suggestions if you are still taking them.
Tied Up
Carmen (to go w/ the whole opera theme)
Crow (they look like gloves the Sara character from the Crow would wear)
Spledificant (just because I like the word)

Congrats they look awesome

hi i just have a couple questions:

1. Is the number of sts to cast on correct (20), seems too few

2. What does ”knit across picking up cast on sts and knittng them together with each stitch’ mean- i have no clue

PLEASE help me- the gloves look awesome and i really want to make myself a pair as soon as possible

Thank you :)

Very clever, I’ve been looking for an easy pattern for this kinda thing for a while. I especially like the “picking up cast on sts and knitting tog”
It took me a few minutes, but once I got it I was like OHHH WOW! COOL!

These gloves are so darn sexy that I can’t wait to cast on! They will be the perfect gift for my sister, a very difficult person to knit for! I can’t wait to make them!

You should call them corset opera gloves! They’re awesome.

A few questions, though:

I don’t understand “Knit across row picking up cast on sts and knitting them together with each st”. How do you go about this? Do you knit a stitch first and then pick up a stick and then knit them both together? Or do you just pick up the stitch and knit them together? (I’m using the slipslipknit method to knit them together). Maybe I’m just lost, hehe.

Also, what’s a gusset increase?

Thanks! I’m looking foward to making these awesome gloves!

hello, i am from paris, those are really fabulous especially that i love to introduce satin ribbons in my knit pieces, so this is perfect!
what i do not understand is the word: “worsted yarn”, and you’re saying one needs approximately 128m for BOTH gloves? yes? that is not much with needles n? 5mm.
i have yarn that is to be knit with size 6, have you experimented knitting this pattern in a tighter stitch with thicker yarn? if yes, did you like the gloves?
if i stay with needles 6mm, would i have to cast on less stitches for the thumb?
thank you for answering, when i do knit those, would you like a photo?
thank you for a great design.

Oooh pretty! Before I start making them, I want to know: would I be able to play the guitar in them? Anyone tried? I see you are typing in the picture; when you close your hand, does the palm material get in the way at all? “Carmen” sounds like a very good name, especially considering I plan to make them red.

Eep! These are the coolest gloves I have ever seen! I would SO love to knit them, but like the only stitch I know is the knit stitch, and I don’t know any of the terms, so I’ll just have to bookmark the page and wait, I guess.

Those having trouble with the first few rows, it’s called a picot edging or hem. Just search “picot” in google, and a lot of step by step websites pop up.

I’d love to see a picture of these, but for some reason, the picture on the site isn’t displaying. Will someone post a picture or email me one? I just finished playing 5 shows of Puccini’s “Tosca” so I’m in the mood for some opera gloves…. I can’t wait to see them!
