Here is the stitch pattern I used for Ariel (published in issue 1 of Yarn Forward, you can see it on the cover) and to make my mum’s scarf.
Each repeat is worked over 10 sts.
Row 2: (p1, yo, p7, p2togb)
Row 3: (ssk, k6, yo, k2)
Row 4: (p3, yo, p5, p2togb)
Row 5: (ssk, k4, yo, k4)
Row 6: (p5, yo, p3, p2togb)
Row 7: (ssk, k2, yo, k6)
Row 8: (p7, yo, p1, p2togb)
Row 9: (ssk, yo, k8)
Row 10: (p2tog, p8, yo)
Row 11: (k1, yo, k7, k2tog)
Row 12: (p2tog, p6, yo, p2)
Row 13: (k3, yo, k5, k2tog)
Row 14: (p2tog, p4, yo, p4)
Row 15: (k5, yo, k3, k2tog)
Row 16: (p2tog, p2, yo, p6)
Row 17: (k7, yo, k1, k2tog)
Row 18: (p2tog, yo, p8)
For my mum’s scarf I worked 3 repeats with a single slipped stitch selvage at both sides, so her scarf was 32 sts wide. I used about 100g of HipKnits Aran silk, and 5mm needles. I’ll try and get a photo of the finished scarf soon, although it doesn’t look like I’m going to be able to convince my mum to model it.
Edit: oops! apparently I can’t translate a pattern from the round to flat knitting without forgetting to reverse the wrong side rows. Dear oh dear.
To answer a question asked in the comments about curling. Like all stocking st based patterns this pattern does curl a bit. The bias lacy pattern cuts down on this and blocking will also make a big difference. Yarn choice will also affect how much the scarf curls, you might want to steer clear of yarn with a lot of stretch, or that blocking doesn’t have much effect on.

Hey, last summer, in the Finnish knitting magazine Ulla, there was the same pattern but in socks!

Thanks so much for sharing this pretty pattern. I met you the other night at the stitch ‘n bitch at Chai Teahouse, and was very impressed then with your published Ariel in Yarn Forward. I’m planning on having a go at the Arisaig wrap! Keep up the great work x
Thanks to share this pattern :)
I really like this scarf – thanx for sharing the pattern, would love to make it some day, the colours you’ve used are fab too! x
This scarf looks so gorgeous, another pattern to feed my scarf knitting addiction! I briefly spoke to you last week at SnB at Chai, just to admire your pretty bolero (thanks so much for putting up that pattern too!). Hopefully I’ll get a chance to introduce myself properly to you back at Chai after Xmas.
Lovely! Thanks!
Thanks so much for sharing this! It’s a lovely pattern.
I have *lots* of Hipknits aran silk on order, I’m going to make one very soon :)
Beautiful scarf! Since it’s almost stockinette, does it curl or lie flat?
I hate to break it to you, but all the purl rows in the written version are the wrong way round :(
It works if you start all the purl rows from the end though! Mine’s looking lovely after the false start :)
I think Ariel is lovely and I am going to make it one of my post-Christmas projects.
This pattern is gorgeous – I can’t wait to feed my scarf gifting habit with something new.
Are the even rows corrected now or do we still need to work them backwards?

Love this pattern.
Hello,
I would like to try out your wonderful pattern (thank you very much for sharing!), but I am a little confused whether the version being described right now is already the corrected one, i.e. can I follow the description or should I rather follow the tip given by Helen (work purl rows backwards)?
Thank you very much for answering, happy knitting,
Patricia
Same question as above… has it been corrected alreaady, or do I still need to work purl rows backwards?
Hello,
I like this scarf . It is possible to send me the pattern as an pdf file ?
I’m looking forward to your answer.
Best regards
Ellen
