All the Pretty Colours

This evening I went to the most civilised of the weeks Halloweenish events, a little gathering with friends, fireworks and horror movies. I’ve been thinking about making monster cupcakes ever since I saw My Little Mochi’s on Halloween and this seemed like the perfect occasion.

I’m not much of a marshmallow fan though and I didn’t want to buy one of those giant bags and have to use the leftovers so I used smarties for the eyes and milkybar buttons broken up for the teeth. Mine aren’t quite as cute as the mistress of adorable’s, but they are more colourful. Even if I was a little dissapointed that the all- natural-colouring-smarties have lost the best colours – the blue and red.

Truthfully I do think getting the artificial colouring out of these things is a good thing, the stuff still makes me crazy, but I was a little sad that they weren’t quite as colourful as I remembered. These actually turned out much better than I was expecting for the amount of effort I put in, they’ve totally been added to mental list of fun things to do if / when I have kids (please tell me that I’m not the only one who isn’t planning on having kidlets any time soon who has such a list).

I love, love fireworks, even though rationally they are the most absolutely pointless thing, not to mention dangerous. Speaking of safety, I was much further back than these photos make it seem.

Home fireworks displays can never really compete with the bi-annual giant ones at the castle here and fireworks night will always mean the end of the festival rather than Guy Fawkes night to me. In fact it was only when I went to uni with lots of English people that it clicked that Guy Fawkes night was supposed to be a celebration of the foiling of the gunpowder plot rather than of the attempt to destroy the houses of parliament, it always confused me when Blue Peter made him out to be the bad guy!

We never had fireworks at home when I was a kid, but we always had sparklers and a part of me still thinks that they’re more fun. They’re definitely more photogenic, although my attempts to get my friend Jen to photograph me writing my name didn’t exactly work out. Still pretty though. There are more photos on flickr, I got a little carried away. Ooh and can you spot the handknit in these photos?

Ahahaha! I completely lost it when I read that you didn’t realise till uni that Guy Fawkes Night was to celebrate the foiling of the plot, not the plot. Ya heathen Scot! That’s wonderful.
I still find it odd (but wonderful) that Scotland and England have different laws but use the same courts. That the House of Lords can decide something, then the same thing can come before them a week later, because noone’s sure if the earlier decision applies in England as well as Scotland.

I don’t really want kids, and yet I have a list of names that I love. Most will probably be for dogs or cats. “Isolde” is on my list.

I know what you mean about having the list for kids. I have had ideas since I was knee high. Never mapped out the marriage thing like some people I know, just what to do with kids. I’ve saved old dolls, clothes, etc. I’ve always wanted a girl. I might go for a girl and a boy but I’d be crazy I think if I had all boys. especially if they were like my two brothers. jeez. I like the vegan posts, my (foster) sister is vegan and i’m a veggie.

Those are amazing!

You aren’t the only one. Until very recently I was actually afraid of the idea of kids, but I’ve always kept a list. My own childhood was so nice, I’m always hoping I can offer some of the treasures to my potential offspring. I have purchased yarn for some heirloom style baby sweaters I’d like to make and I am seriously considering purchasing this:

I’ve also ordered this. I think a kid (mine or not!) would love it!

I looooove the cakes! Such a brilliant idea to use smarties for the eyes i prefert it like that! So colorful and perfect for kids.

I never write a list, but yes i have already thinks of what will i do for kids (mine or not) later, and now, these cakes are in my plans!

I love fireworks, i remember, one day my parents were invited to a sort of BBQ on the beach and we spend the night there. There were a guy who had work in a fireworks company and had such a fireworks in stock, so he made the most beautiful fireworks i ever seen! I will always remember it was so fantastic!
I like fireworks even i’m always afraid that happen an accident.

And, i recognize your handknit! It’s Amaryllis! I guessed your name written with the sparkler too. ; )

Personally I think yours are cuter than the originals! And while I don’t have a kids-list, I don’t think I’d need one for these; I can’t think of any of my friends who’d be too mature for a monster cupcake or two. (Although, as I am slightly concerned that my boyfriend appears to have an ever-growing list of things he’d do with his kids, I might hide them from him just in case he gets any ideas…)

Ohh, and despite being resolutely English, I keep forgetting about the Guy Fawkes thing, and have spent most of this week insisting to some very confused Germans that we do indeed celebrate an attempt to bring down our government.

They do still make red smarties – you must just not have got any in your packet. Regardless, I love your little monster cakes, thanks for sharing the link!

Those cupcakes are adorable!! :D They have such personality, which is always a good thing, imho. :)

You are most definitely not the only one who has a “kid list” that isn’t planning on kids any time soon (even if I got in a lasting relationship tomorrow, I wouldn’t have kids for at least a couple years out… and even then I think I need to finish uni first!). Golly, I even buy books for the “someday kiddos”. I just bought a gigantic art book the other day, that while it was for me, I kept thinking how nice it’d be for the “someday kiddos” to be exposed to good art. Maybe I’m just obsessive or something. ;) lol.
