Yesterday evening I met up with some City Knitty friends for a last visit to my lys. I certainly wasn’t planning on buying anything, but it’s round the corner so I went to say hello. Jeanette had unearthed some Lana Grossa sample balls that I hadn’t seen before and so I came home with this. Because I absolutely do not have enough red yarn, and I definitely need a red hat. After no calculating at all I cast on, working a stitch pattern I found in the 3rd Barbara Walker dictionary into a disc. It seems to be working so far, though there’s not really any way to get a big floppy beret out of a single 50g ball. Oh well, that’s just an excuse to make another floppier version.
I love the little I cord stalk and it makes for a really easy way to cast on in the centre of a circle. Red, cashmere, lace, cables, berets and a bargain – so much to love.
It’s sad to see Hand Knit close, especially as it was so convenient but there’s a brand new yarn shop in Edinburgh which is rather exciting. It opened yesterday and I’m going to investigate this afternoon. I’m sure there will be something to show for that trip!

It’s so pretty. Of course you need a red hat. Especially a top-down, lace, cashmere, cabled, floppy beret!
Umm….I love it! I’ve always thought that lace and cables complement each other extremely well, so obviously I’m a fan of this! And the red? Gorgeous…
That cast on is genius, now I feel all inspired to try and design some hats!
A red bérêt is soo Parisian! Lovely! I can’t wait to see it all finished!
What lovely yarn! I taught myself to knit about 2 weeks ago…. let the scarf-making begin! Maybe someday I’ll figure out berets…. *sigh*
Hummm seems to be again a wonderful beret!! You english people had a lot of choice in your local yarn shop!
Are you planning on writing this pattern up for sale? I’d totally buy it. I think I need a red beret too. :)
