Boston

I had so much fun in Boston with my hosts Jess and Casey (better known as Ravelry), that I hardly remembered to take any photos. Some of the highlights were, Jess’s Vespa tour, including a trip to the North End for wonderful pizza at Regina’s

pizza-1

followed by gelato in the sunshine.

I talked Jess into coming to the Fluevog store with me, not that she was particularly unwilling. Friday was their annual birthday sale, so we returned then

fluevogs-1

and now have matching shoes – perhaps surprisingly mine are not the red.

And of course, I had a lot of fun playing with my new friend Bob. I managed not to take a single photo at either of my events at Windsor Button or Stitch House (who incidentally had pizza and sewing machines for hire – awesome!), so if anyone has any I’d love to see. Other people are doing a much better job than I am blogging my trip – you can read more about my visit to Charlottesvile last week on my guide (and driver and house finder extraordinaire) Elizabeth’s blog.

Right now I’d better go and get ready for another event today in Providence, RI at Fresh Purls.

I went to Boston on my honeymoon and I loved it. I wish I could move there.

Wow, pizza for hire? – cool (think I may have misunderstood there).

Your new Fluevogs are great – I love red shoes, they look fantastic and they have so many great filmic and literary associations.

Ooh, Boston looks so beautiful. Love the North End. When I was there last fall we ate an appalling amount of sweets at the pastry shops up there.

Is that a human being emerging from the primordial soup that is your gelato?

Glad you’re having fun! :)

The North End has some great Italian restaurants. I’m feeling nostalgia for my undergrad days! Congrats on converting Jess to your Fluvevog obsession. I’m tempted to check out their store here myself now.

I love Boston and one of the things I like more is the dialect. Can I add something?

The “Boston accent” is widely parodied in the U.S. as the speech of the Kennedys and Harvard graduates.

It is non-rhotic (i.e., drops the “r” sound at the end of syllables unless the next syllable starts with a vowel) and uses a “broad a” so words like “bath” sound like “baath”.

Boston English has many dialect words like “wicked”, meaning “very”, and “frappe”, meaning “milkshake”.

The accent originated in the non-rhotic speech of 17th century East Anglia and Lincolnshire, where many of the first Bostonians originated.

Hope this helps…

Looks like great fun! Have you updated your USA tour google calendar or added a new events list? I’d love to plan ahead and try to make it to one of your Midwest events. :-)

Boston is such a great city, and having local guides/hosts must be awesome. You certainly are getting around the northeast! :)

To add to the comment regarding the Boston accent: It’s the only place I’ve ever been where “Bob” is pronounced with two syllables. I don’t even know if it’s possible to spell it… Boahb, maybe? Well, anyway, I love it.
