Thank you

For helping to raise a grand total of £15,397.58 (about US $24500) for Médecins Sans Frontières for their terribly challenging work in Haiti. I’m incredibly overawed and humbled by the response to this campaign, thank you.

Happy to help! That’s an amazing sum :) I’m glad I held off on buying all your patterns and had a chance to do it all this month!

It will be years before the country has any similarity to infrastructure again, I hope the western world will stay involved and will keep on helping.

Thank you for making it so easy to do two things:
1) give more money to Médicins Sans Frontières
2) give the gift of one of your patterns to a friend who’s been going through a terribly rough patch in her life.

Why wasn’t this half this amount of attention being given to the earthquake not too long ago in Sichuan province in China? I’m just wondering.

Lilly February 2, 2010 at 12:18 am

Please note that I have indeed donated to the Haiti effort and fully support Medecins Sans Frontieres. I am merely commenting.

Wow that’s a staggering effort, yay for knitters!
Lilly – I really have no idea, but you got me thinking – possibly the increased media etc attention is because of the higher loss of life in Haiti vs Sichuan -170 to 200K vs 69-86K (which does not mean much.. a life is a life) and because the Chinese govt was in a much better financial position to support rebuilding and recovery of the Sichuan region compared to the Haitian govt?

It’s a great amount of money, and it’s very generous of you to donate it, but if it represents the 50%, it means you earned the same amount of money this month. I can’t help thinking you have benefited from this process, too, charity can be a great marketing device.

purlyjo says February 3, 2010 at 1:55 pm

Well Done Ysolda, its a fabulous donation and I was happy to contribute by purchasing a couple of patterns myself.

I just wanted to add in your defence that *Squeamish* may want to read your earlier post where you upped your donation to 80% of all pattern sales and 50% of book sales on the back of such a good initial response to your pledge….

Reply

Charlotte February 3, 2010 at 4:57 pm

I understand your point Squeamish, but are you really suggesting that Ysolda shouldn’t have donated a percentage of her profits to MSF? Or do you think she should have given it all to MSF?

Many of the sales she made are ones that would have come her way later in the year – loads of people have her patterns queued up. Instead, knitters have bulk-bought patterns – so that figure represents a large number of future sales, if you see what I mean – money that would have come her way later this year had she not offered to share it with MSF. By my reckoning, Ysolda has been more generous than you seem to think. And as purlyjo says, it was 80% in the end, not 50% – though 50% is incredibly generous anyway, isn’t it?
I don’t know Ysolda, by the way, just in case anyone reading this thinks this is some sort of PR number!

Jenny February 3, 2010 at 6:02 pm

Staggeringly Awesome!!! Inspiringly generous of you!! My aunt would say “You’ll have stars on your crown in heaven!!”

Reply

D Louise February 3, 2010 at 7:11 pm

At the time Ysolda’s patterns were still listed on the Haiti Relief page on Ravelry, there were 84 or more pages of patterns listed. When I sorted according to most popular, almost all of Ysolda’s patterns were in the top 20 or so of all of these patterns. We LOVE Ysolda’s patterns! And people are actually knitting these designs. I was looking at the work of another designer last night, and for one pattern thousands of people had favorited it,and there were 7 (!) projects. And yet for Liesl alone, there are more than 1200 projects, of course counting only those people have taken the time to log them on Ravelry. I only hope that Ysolda’s overwhelming generosity doesn’t mean a lean time for her in the coming days because her fans have bought all the patterns we want. Surely, there are more knitters out there who haven’t yet discovered Ysolda and who will fall for her when they do…

Reply

Lu February 3, 2010 at 8:46 pm

I have had my eye on Liesl for ages so bought it now ready to knit at some point. I think it is a great way to raise money (god save us from charity singles by Simon Cowell)! I already donate £4 a month to the Red Cross but wanted to do more. I love Ysolda’s blog and Flickr and wanted to support her hard work as well as a good cause! In response to Squemish’s comments I think if Ysolda has made some money in the process is not a bad thing as working in the creative industries is hardly a profitable endeavour (I worked with perf artists for a while)! Well done Ysolda and well done knitters of the world xx

That is so amazing! And completely down to you, Ysolda for being so inspiring through your generosity. I was in such awe when you donated 80% of the profits to counter the increase in sales you were having.

I wonder what those being so critical have done to help a charity lately… hmmm… seems some people prefer to criticise than give credit to a wonderful lady who has managed to raise a significant sum of money to help others.

This is not about every other charity, there are many worthy charities and causes and we would spread ourselves thin trying to help each and every one.
Ysolda did a good thing when she could, she is not responsible to every other charity because she helped out with this one. Why don’t you go criticise the red cross for not caring about animals; or a children’s cancer charity for not caring about trafficked children? It would make the same amount of sense.

And the accusation that she did it for the extra sales is really beyond the pale, clearly she was just doing her bit to help and was quite overwhelmed with the response. I can’t imagine what sort of person would think she was being in any way selfish or self-concerned with her fund raising efforts.

You rock Ysolda, your patterns are lovely and you have a kind and generous heart. :-)

Yes February 6, 2010 at 8:12 pm

Also, not a PR number, just a fan of Ysolda’s patterns and being compassionate. :-)

i purchased a couple of patterns from you, and a few from other designers. they were for projects already in my queue, and were patterns already sitting in my cart on ravelry. the fact that the designers pledged a percentage of their proceeds spurred me to purchase them now instead of later, when i would be ready to knit the design.
buying patterns i already love was an easy way for me to support the generosity of knitting designers whose work i have admired. now i admire these designers for their philanthropy as well.
how many of us who work for an hourly wage would be willing to donate half (or more) of our earnings to such a worthwhile cause? i could not afford to do so.
thank you ysolda. for being such a good person. and such a wonderful designer that knitters want to knit what you create.

I am overawed. I came back to see how you had done and am flabbergasted. In my lady like fashion, I told partner, “holy sh*t!” I am now truly curious as to the amount raised through Ravelry pattern purchases.

I purchased several of your patterns and am amazed at your talent. Knit on my lovely. I am also doing the Mountain View cardigan (another pattern purchased in support of MSF), though I rather suspect you will finish before me.
