Two by two

Sarah and I made it to Boston yesterday, and after crazy weeks of getting ready for this trip I finally have time to catch up with you here. If you’ve been reading for a while you’ll know that including large size ranges in my garment patterns is important to me.

Amanda in Lauriel
One thing that’s always bothered me is that it’s great to find a pattern that includes your size but if you’re not close to the size of the model it can be hard to visualise how it’s actually going to look on you.

Lauriel - Ysolda
No matter what grading decisions the designer makes, the same pattern is always going to look different with different proportions. When I first thought of doing a book of garment patterns I knew immediately that I wanted to show everything on at least two different models, with different sizes and body shapes.

Melia - Ysolda
Last year at Tnna I happened to mention this plan and that I wanted to find a model who was actually plus size (as opposed to the modeling world’s idea of plus which is about a 38″ bust) to my friend Amanda who works for Lorna’s Laces and she immediately offered to model.

Amanda in Melia-2
Amanda, as you’ve already seen, is absolutely gorgeous so of course I said yes. The fact that she lives so far away presented a few practical issues but I’m so glad we worked them out. I really hope that you agree that these designs look equally good on both of us and I hope it helps you envision how they’ll look on you.

Cria - Ysolad
It would be wonderful to show them in every size, but for that I’ll just have to wait for you to upload your projects to Ravelry. Once I get the book to you of course, which will be a little while longer – thank you for being patient! I’ll be back soon to show you a little more of what will be included and our adventures at Squam and Tnna.

Amanda in Garter
If you’re near New Hampshire this weekend please do come see us at the Squam Art fair on Saturday night!

That is going the extra mile! Not only the awkwardness of doing two photoshoots, but all the additional knitting that goes into another (larger) sample garment. It’s this kind of attention to detail that makes me think you’re so deserving of your success! And even though I don’t know the name of that cardigan with the arrowhead pattern on the collar/yoke, it’s so in my queue already – too too gorgeous…

Oh, Ysolda, this post made me a little teary-eyed. Thank you for getting this. So many times I look at a pattern and wonder what it would really look like on a woman my size. To be able to see the garment on a big woman is so, so rare. This is a book I’ll buy, for that alone. Thank you.

Amanda is really gorgeous, I have to say I even like some of the cardis better on her, even though I’m not a plus size! : ) Great move, you’re pushing the boundaries of the approach to knitting with your thoughtfulness as always. Really makes me smile inside. : )

Thank you, it may seem silly but I cried a little when I read your blog. Its not easy being plus size, and everyone makes it seem like its not right or that those who require a little bit more room are fat or obese. Some of us are just dealing with genetics of what we were born with and that doesn’t always mean a size 38.” So thank you again, I am very excited about the book and can not wait to cast on

Though nowhere near where you are in designing, I too think that this is a very important thing to show, and hope that more garment designers (myself included) will use it in the future! Thanks for setting a lovely standard.

Oh, I just love the hooded number! I heart your designs, Ysolda, but I’ve never bought a book, just individual patterns here and there. I can already tell I’ll be buying this one.

Also, fantastic use of different size models – I think its also helpful for us in-betweeners, even if we are not the size of the models, seeing that a pattern has that sort of versatility really gives a knitter confidence. Hurrah!

I love seeing them in both sizes. I also like how you have the sweater styled differently for each size. It helps me figure out how a cardigan will look because certain button combos don’t work for my figure and I never can figure out if a sweater will hang right buttoned differently. I can’t wait for the book to come out! I love the first design.

This is so great. I’m close to the smaller end of the scale but my sister is larger and whenever we look at things together there is a lot of “What do you think this would look like with bigger breasts in it?” while she tries to decide if it’s worth making something.

I also love that this means we’ll see each pattern in two different colours and modelled on people with different colouring. I often have trouble picturing a pattern in any colour other than the one it is shown in and it’s awesome to get that extra little push to pick a colour myself.

I can’t wait for that hooded pattern. The pockets are so cute. It’s going to be perfect for fall dog walks (you know – when it’s not really cold enough for a coat but too chilly for just a shirt and those pockets are essential for holding the baggies I’ll inevitably need and the keys I’ll want to check the mail on the way back).

Reply

Carol June 4, 2010 at 3:29 am

I was just going through several (knitting) magazines and wishing that the models were more realistic and that they would ‘wear the right size’. Everything always looks oversized on them and I know that’s not how they’ll look on us regular people. Thanks for attacking this issue – You two are beautiful!

connie June 4, 2010 at 3:58 am

That’s awesome! I think it’s a great idea–though I confess, I have been drawn to some of your patterns because we seem to have similar body types, and it was so nice to see what a pattern would likely look like on me! But the more sizes the better….and I love seeing how versatile patterns are. Maybe I can use this to convince my mother some of these would look good on her, too….hmm….she is quite skeptical.

Julia June 4, 2010 at 6:49 am

Thank you Ysolda and Amanda! Thank you so very much!

Why, you ask? (Well, maybe you don´t, but I would like to explain)

I am a plus size woman – and I also think that I can be very sexy. I like my curves most of time and I like to show off what I think is especially pretty and sexy about me and my body. Like most women does, I think.

I find it hard to find clothes that is not baggy and boxy – I like clothes that fit me in a flattering way without feeling I want to diguise my size, I am overweight – and no matter how I clothes, that would be showing.

So thank you – because you refuse be “boxed” – you show how to be sexy and pretty. You wear your garment – it is not the other way. And that is for me also what knitting is about – to make beautiful garments that fits and accentuate women in all sizes.

Yours sincerely,

Julia Zahle

Curvyjax June 4, 2010 at 9:07 am

Can’t wait for the book to come out – especially if the patterns are released one a week like the wlk books. I love that there are details that you can include or not on the different sized tops, and that I can see bust shaping is there, so I know I will be able to adjust the pattern to allow for a body somewhere inbetween you and Amanda, but with gigantaboobs that mean I often have to wear a top that is far too big.

And, having bought (and made) so many of your patterns, I know that they will be beautifully well written with clear diagrams, which makes it so much easier to custom adjust where I need to.

I love that you have gone to the extra work of knitting for two sizes, and that you are both non-models and gorgeous. Thanks xxx

I’m not plus-size but the fact that, until now, I’d only seen the larger modelled photos has given me a real insight into how distancing it can be to see garments in a size far remote from your own.

Until this post I’d been totally uninterested in your new book but having seen you modelling the cardigans I can now see how they’d look on me and I’m 100% looking forward to release day.

Thanks again,it has been a real insight :)

GENIUS. Well done Ysolda. This has obviously involved a lot of work – but there will be a LOT of grateful knitters out there. I love the look of the new patterns (esp.cropped grey cardigan – beautiful). The size issue and how a pattern translates is a real problem if you are either smaller than average or larger. Ravelry is great as you can browse around and see whether or not a certain design looks best on broader shoulders, larger breasts, no waist, tiny waist etc…. But how wonderful of you do a mini Rav as it were which means that knitters don’t have to wait for someone else to take the plunge – does that make sense?

Thank you. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. Thank you, all the world and up to the sky. !Gracia, a Dios!

I’ve been fat most of my life, and it’s easy for fat chicks like me to have a natural predjudice towards slender, beautiful people. It’s *easier* to believe that you don’t think about us, that you’d rather not do the work to upsize, and especially not the full follow through to see how the proportions look on large women. It’s just plain easier to think you wouldn’t care.

Thank you for reminding me that just because someone is a slender designer, doesn’t mean that they aren’t thinking of people like me. I am humbled by your conviction, and I’m reminded to put aside preconceptions of others, as I would hope they’d put aside preconceptions of me.

Please don’t freak out if I meet you in person some day and ask to give you a hug. You deserve one, and some really good chocolate too. :)

I’m totally buying this book just in support of this inclusivity in clothing design. I hope it’s a runaway success so that other designers feel an incentive to follow suit.

Plus, whether I knit any patterns from it or not, I will then own a collection of photos of gorgeous women of different shapes and sizes, being beautiful together in their own unique ways, and not in competition. What could be better than that?

Hello,
As someone who is an avid knitter, but who is also plus sized, Thank you! Nothing is more irritating than seeing a “Plus” sized book of patterns, with a size 8 model on the front. If the woman who is modeling is smaller than my thigh, she is NOT plus sized, no matter what the fashion gurus in the crack=addict wisdom try to tell me.
I might actually get your book and try to make myself something. I don’t generally knit for myself, because of this very problem. Thank you thank you thank you!

What a lovely thing to do! I’ve always been annoyed at the way the fashion world segregates women by size, pushing larger women into separate stores or departments. Even in the knitting world, too often patterns for larger women are separated out into their own books. There are patterns and fashions for “women,” and there are patterns and fashions for “plus-size women,” as if they are some other species.

What you’re doing with your book is to make a grand statement that women are women! We come in all shapes and sizes, but we all want to look beautiful. Thank you.

As for designing with all sizes & shapes in mind – you deserve every bit of the credit you’re getting Ysolda. Feminists (& I do consider myself to be one) often talk of sisterhood between women, but when it comes to personal appearance, such love & support can often be sadly lacking.
THIS is an example of how things should be. Brilliant!

Ysolda, thank you so much! It’s so wonderful to know there’s a designer out there keeping us larger folks in mind!!

Oh thanks for the extra effort! I’m also on the plus side of the spectrum and I always hesitate when I see those nice garments wore by slim models on the magazines. I usually end up knitting for my daughter…. Speaking of this…. An extratwist… Would you offer these patterns in children sizes? sometimes it’s hard to find good patterns once they have left toddlerhood and before they reach puberty! I love your designs and some would be very fitting for my little one!

I love your pattern and I am working hard to become a better knitter so I can try one of them! You are doing a great job and Amanda looks aboslutely gorgeous (so do you!). I absolutely love the two last patterns of this post!

Oh wow! You’re comments are making me so happy, I keep coming back to them and tearing up again. This has been a lot of work, but I really felt it was important and I’m so glad that you really get it. Reading your comments makes it absolutely worth the work and I feel so motivated now to bring it all together. Thank you, thank you so much to all of you.

Love the concept. It has always been a challenge for me to envision a pattern on myself. I can’t wait to read your book!

Yay! This is a great idea. I am looking forward to the book, both as a knitter, and as a librarian (and fledgling book-blogger), because I think the publishing model you are using is so interesting.

I like them all but I absolutely LOVE the details on the first cardigan! Consider it queued!

Amanda looks amazing — so glad you’re doing this! As always, you’re pushing things in the direction they definitely need to go! xo!

Thank you Ysolda! As you can see from all of the wonderful comments, we really appreciate the efforts you go to. I love that your designs are flattering on people of different sizes, and an extra thank you for Amanda for being a lovely model- proving that you don’t have to be a thin little waif to be gorgeous and look stunning in some beautiful knits! I really can’t wait to get this book, I normally don’t buy a lot of knitting books because I am such an odd size (not only larger, but much taller than average). I love your designs and this makes me want to try them for myself. I hope more designers (and the clothing industry) follow your example! Thank you!

Love the models, thin and fat. Love the designs. When can I get my hands on them?

Beautiful. . . the sweaters, the models, and the idea! You’re right; it’s hard to visualize when the pictures are so dissimilar to one’s own body type.

OMG That grey hoodie you are wearing in the third shot makes me want to throw my money at you. How gorgeous would that be with the soft halo of an angora blend border?

I know I’m only echoing what everyone else in the world is telling you, but I love the way you’re executing this. Love it.

I know that this has all been said, but thank you so much for the extra thought and effort that you are putting into this book! The fact that you care so much about all of us is so wonderful. Not only do you work painstakingly to be sure that your patterns are easy to understand, but you care about how we feel, and that we can have a vision in our minds when we cast on. Your efforts are much appreciated, and I think that you are a very special person. Your ideas may be the first domino that will eventually tumble all of the stupid misconceptions that are held out there in the world. I hope so. Thank you again, so much.

I love what you’re doing–and I love seeing so many photos of Amanda!! I have knit for LL (for TNNA–so you’ve probably seen my stuff, as a matter of fact), but have never had the chance to meet Amanda in person. Now I can picture her cute self when she sends me her emails.

Thanks for what you’re doing–I hope more designers will take your example and follow suit!

Dear Ysolda–

First of all, I adore your designs. I own both of your books. My question is this: When are these new designs going to be released? I really want to make both of the cardigans!

Thank You,
Amanda

Your new collection is fantastic, Ysolda! Well done!! Although I’m not a plus size, it’s good to find patterns in many sizes.
I love the grey hoodie!! It’s adorable in red, also; I can’t wait for the book!!

Thanks for this I really appreciate the trouble you are taking to be so inclusive. These patterns look fab and I’m looking forward to the new book. I have made several of your patterns and they always work really well, I have just finished Leisl and I’m loving it.!! I wish you every success cos you are a designer that really deserves it.

I love these patterns and it is great to see them in larger sizes – I often dont bother trying stuff cos I think it will only look good on the size 0 model – this is very inspiring, thankyou.
ps – if youre going to squam visit Wolfboro – its gorgeous – and it has a great diner!

Thank you – I don’t usually knit for myself because I am not confident in my skills at trying to enlarge patterns to fit me. Many of the patterns I do find are just not that stylish – but yours are to die for! Can’t wait for the book.

this is such a brilliant idea! if women saw themselves as they really are (large or small or in between, white or pink or tan or brown and everything in the spectrum!) portrayed in the world around them, then they and the rest of the planet would expand their internal vision of what is beautiful! rather than living within the narrow confines dictated to us by those in charge of advertising! on a separate note, i love your work! one day i hope to come to scotland and if i did… where would i find your patterns, work, designs??

Thank you so very much!!! I am a rather experienced knitter who has yet to make a sweater to fit my own plus sized body. The biggest reason for this is that I have no idea what it’s going to look like on me. I actually cried a little when I read your blog post. I can’t wait for your book to come out. I don’t buy a ton of knitting books, but I will be buying yours!

it is very pleasing to see someone working to show the garments in more sizes. i believe it will also gain support of the larger community and probably helps sales too. good luck!
