So what’s inside Little Red?

by ysolda on May 13, 2011

We’ve approved the book files for printing and our wonderful printer is bringing in a night shift so that they can run the presses constantly until the books are printed. With this milestone reached it seemed like time to tell you a little more about what’s actually inside the book. The 7 sweaters (well, 6 sweaters and a tank) you’ve probably already seen. But although each pattern is super detailed with as much info as I could think of to include, they each run to only about 20 pages. That’s a lot, but it means they only take up about half of the 264 total pages.

The first half is focused on providing you with a sort of tool kit for sweater success. I talk to many knitters who aren’t sure about trying sweater knitting, or have been put of by projects that didn’t turn out as they hoped. A project like a hat doesn’t take a lot of commitment in terms of either time or money. While you might be happily dreaming about how cute you’ll look in it while knitting, if it’s more shower cap than French glamour you probably know someone else it will work much better on. Clothes shopping can be hard enough when you get to try things on before purchasing. Making your own clothes requires something of a leap of faith even as it gives you the possibility of creating exactly the style and fit you want. It’s my hope that Little Red in the City will be your reference for achieving that, making sweater knitting fun, exciting and much less risky.

Getting to the end of this blog post involved a lot of scrolling, but it’s only a tiny peek at what’s inside the book. If it sounds like it might be useful to you you can order it here.

Ysolda, “Little Red in the City” looks incredible. Congratulations!
I had no idea what we were in for when I pre-ordered a few months back, and I am just blown away by the quality and care that has gone into “Little Red”.
Thank you for the”book swatch” :)

Thank you for making the point that everyone’s bodies are awesome just the way they are. I hate fruit and vegetable comparisons, I hate the idea that an article of clothing is going to be “slimming”, and I especially hate the idea that larger people don’t deserve to have nice clothes to wear because their bodies are defective. I am really looking forward to this book! :)

All of this sounds incredibly useful! I’m just dipping a toe into sweater knitting, and it will be fantastic to have these sorts of detailed explanations on hand. I’ll be buying it for the patterns *and* as a reference book!

I really want to order it but gah… shipping to Denmark is £10.30! If I order from Amazon instead, will I still get the digital backup? :)

Wow! So much more than just your awesome patterns! Can’t wait to get my hands on it and devour it, esp the parts about getting something that fits MY shape! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I’ve been eagerly awaiting this book! And the more detailed, the better!

I’m a pretty curvy girl myself, and tops tend to fall into 2 categories – I either get one fitted enough that it acknowledges I have a waist, but then it’s too tight along my bust, or I get a loose one that doesn’t put so much emphasis on the bust, but then it’s so baggy, I look heavier than I really am.

I can’t wait to read this and make sweaters and cardigans that fit me!

So exciting! I wish I could camp out on the printers’ doorstep – but maybe that would look like I were a mad person? Order was placed a while ago, so now I have the perfect situation – a good post day, with no guilt!

I can NOT wait for this book to come out.

Not too long ago I went to see a rather famous knitting book author speak, and as there were only about 20 people in the audience,we all had the chance to ask questions. As this author is rather busty (so am I), I asked her to talk a little bit about how to adjust sweater patterns to fit properly around the bust instead of having them look like you were wearing a large sack. Her reply:

“If you can’t figure it out for yourself, then you shouldn’t be knitting sweaters.”

Gee. Thanks.

Anyway. THANK YOU for this book. I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy.

I am so excited for this book because of the six sweaters I’ve made, only two get any sort of wear at all because of fit issues. That being said, my Liesl fits me just great. :D

I haven’t minded the time it has taken from announcement to print; it’s given me a many good days of daydreaming about yarns and which sweater I want to try first. Thanks so much for your hard work!

Is it any wonder that we “women of size” adore you? I pre-ordered in December and have been waiting patiently for the book, helped along by the little peeks. I know it will be well worth the wait <3

The book looks absolutely wonderful! I have never found a good reference book on sizing garments-you should see some of my disasters! The previews of your book makes me feel like I will have a guardian knitting designer angel sitting on my shoulder-I can’ wait! You are inspirational!

Hi Ysolda! It was so nice meeting you at Lorna’s last week, I wish I could have spent some time talking with you. You are one of my fav designers, and getting the chance to thumb thru your book was awesome. Thanks so much! I can’t wait for the book to come out so I can read about all your tips and tricks. Maybe someday I’ll get the chance to pick your brain, but until then the book will do nicely. :)

I’ve tried to order the print edition, but can’t seem to get anywhere with the order. What do you suggest? Tried Ravelry, but only the digital version shows up. I like books, so please help!

I had no idea the book would be so detailed in respect to shaping and sweater making! I’m looking forward to it even more now, if such a thing is possible. The design of the book itself looks lovely, I really like the handrawn details.

Is there any definite shipping date though? I’m sure you get a lot of that kind of questions, but I’m moving out of the country soon. Is it possible to change the address of the order?

Hi Ysolda! I was speaking with the owners of your printer yesterday (I’ve known and worked with them for years) and they were so excited about your project. They asked if I was a knitter — and I’ve just started learning over the past year! Ironically, I’m on the finishing stages of my very first sweater and so I am extremely interested to see your book! I’ll be ordering! My sweater is ok for a first try but I really want to improve on my skills and I think I’ve hit the jackpot here with your book. Greetings from New Hampshire and your book is in wonderful hands.

P.S. Love your blog. Cleo is precious and I’ve done some dyeing of wools with mushrooms — so many things were of great interest to me!
