skull illusion scarf

*New: the skull illusion scarf pattern including both the chart and Mary’s written directions can now be found here
I made the original for a craftster scarf swap about a year ago and sent it to Rose.
This is it (I hope she doesn’t mind me using her pic of it, I don’t have any)

Unfortunately I deleted the chart when I moved my site. But several people wanted to make it and now thanks to Leah who sent me a scan of the original I’ve been able to re-do it (and fix the mistake).
There is a knitalong going for this project and other illusion scarves (like the alien one in snb) on craftster here: http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=39825.0

there is also a yahoo group for illusion knitting in general

And here are some of the amazing scarves other people have made
Ida’s, with cute kitties :)

THANK YOU so much - so glad we found your site - I just did the alien scarf from SnB, and the kids wanted skulls. I tried to graph one out…but we couldn’t agree on the crossbones…..your graph is perfect - the skull is just the way I wanted it, and it has the crossbones that the kids wanted - thanks again!

Hi YSolda,
Would it be OK with you if I posted written directions for you skull scarf at illusion_knitting? I wrote it out longhand for myself. People who are having trouble with the chart are requesting it.
Let me know. Thanks!

sure, I’d much rather follow a chart but I know some people prefer to work form longhand directions or both. I don’t mind you sharing it on the yahoo group but do you think I could have a copy to make available here as well?

Thanks! I’ll send you a copy of my written version. E-mail me your address. I tried the address you have listed at yahoo but it came back to me as undeliverable.

Hi, Ysolda.

Thanks for posting your chart again (I emailed you asking for it when it was still MIA).

I didn’t post the 6th comment, but I did write the quoted text when posting on my scarf as a WIP on our Madrid knitters’ blog:
http://quedadas.blogsome.com/2005/08/01/quedada-2005-08-04/

You can now see the finished scarf on my “Churras con merinas” knitblog (in French)

Hi !
while visiting your website I fell in love with your Alien Illusion Scarf. It is just exactly the kind of thing I was longing to knit !
Would you mind sending me the chart please? I tried to find it via different website but was unable to…
I know I’m a bit late and that you must all have already finished knitting yours…
Let me know if it is possible for you to send me the chart, and most of all please EXCUSE MY ENGLISH !!! School was long ago…

the skull illusion scarf is on the patterns page of my site (there’s a link at the top of this page)
if, however you really mean the alien illusion scarf - I didn’t design that but you’ll find it in the book Stitch n Bitch by Debbie Stoller
hope that helps - and don’t worry about your english it’s fine.

Hello,

This pattern is absoloutely amazing! I was wondering if you, or someone you know would be able to do a custom illusion design/pattern. I’ve been wanting to do something with small three-leafed clovers running down the middle…

i could but I’m hideously busy at the moment so I don’t really have the time to make charts up. there is a yahoo group called illusion_knitting someone on there might be able to help you, or give you links to a guide on how to make your own chart. It really isn’t very difficult once you understand how the technique works. Sorry I can’t be more helpful and good luck :)

I’m having a problem with my scarf. I tried turning the pattern upside down and following it, but it’s not coming out right. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I was looking for a scarf pattern and my 10 year old son found your site. He wants me to make your scarf so bad. Well He seem to really like it. I think it is just to neat. I wonder if there is a way to turn it into a Jinx skull. Well I printed out your pattern and I am ready to go.
and any other great illusion patterns please post it.

I guess I got here too late. There was nothing on the link. I just started my first illusion piece and really wanted to try the skull. Please let me know if you ever re-post the pattern or chart.
Thank you,
Allison

Hi,
Love the pattern :) We’ve decided it would be prefect for my brother-in-law who doesn’t wear scarves but likes subversive clothing.

To Allison & Colleen - go to the top of the page and click on “Patterns”

Many thanks :)
