problems with arisaig lace
I’ve had a few comments left by people having problems centering the lace pattern. To be completely perfectly honest most of these questions have confused me. I’ve had another look at the charts - and there doesn’t seem to be a problem. But I’ll do my best to help. One thing to make sure is that a YO (yarn over) does NOT involve knitting a stitch - you just bring the yarn to the front and work the next stitch as directed. Bringing the yarn to the front and then knitting a stitch would definitely through everything off. In row 15 the sl, k2tog, psso is a double derease that turns the middle three sts in between the yarn overs from the previous right side row into 1. If directions are confusing me I find it easiest to figure out what to do by comparing my knitting to a photo - there is a close up scan of a swatch of the lace with the pattern - looking at that might help.
I’m aware I’m not helping much but if you post photos of your knitting and more specific questions I’ll see what I can come up with.
good luck

I’ve knit 1 sleeve and am just about to start increasing on the second and I’ve had no problems with getting the lace to work out, I just keep marking the chart to show me which stitch I’m starting on as I have a very short memory.
To be honest, by the time I was halfway up the sleeve I pretty much could ‘read’ the pattern and figure out where things were going anyway.
I am LOVING knitting it, I’ve jigged the numbers to knit it in thicker yarn (Rowan 4 ply cotton) and I think it’s looking really good (and it’s knitting up faster lol).
Great pattern!

Thanks for re-assuring me that its not just me that thinks the charts are ok. After a while editing a pattern like this you just start to see things how they should be whether or not they’re actually right.
I’d love to see how it’s turning out in cotton - I considered doing another one in cotton. Are you keeping the deep ribbing at the bottom? I can never get 2×2 ribbing even in cotton, and I’d probably do away with it.

Hey! I posted a while back saying i had a problem keeping the lace centered, but that was just on my swatch. I started the cardigan and just followed your directions on adding extra stockinette stitches to keep the pattern centered and its coming out great.I think what I was scared about at first was doing something that the pattern didnt specifically say to do… maybe thats why everyone else was having problems? i love the pattern though!
This is my first garment, so I have a question about sizing. Did you do your exact measurement or did you add ease? I really want mine to look like yours (i’m doing the M which is my exact measurement) but I cant seem to get the right gauge. I started the lace on sz 1 needles, but I was knitting too loose, so I went to 0’s and measured it and its measuring 19″ across rather than 18″ (which is weird cause I never knew I was THAT loose of a knitter!) I guess I just wanted some comfort in knowing that 2″ bigger than my actual measurements will actually turn out like yours! HOw much do you think it willexpand after blocking (if i dont stretch it out)?
Sorry for all the questions, I just really want this to turn out good. :]
Thanks
Laura

No problems so far, and loving knitting it - though the long rib on small needles is making my short attention span challenge its expectations…. no really I am loving knitting this in cream 3/4 ply (its not either) baby alpaca silk mix that my mother brought back from australia. I am sure it will be lovely and will post a pic when it is done…. thanks for submitting it to knitty so we can all share….. :D

I too absolutely love this sweater and have finally started. I always do the sleeves for my gauge and was surprised to find that the sleeve was so wide. My gauge with the matchmaker is just as the label says, 22 sts/ 4″. I think if try to get your gauge it will be too stiff. I’ll probably just do the smaller size. My question is about the sleeve. Yours, in the photo, is close fitting. My wrist measures six and a half inches but the largest size, which I’d like to make, measures 12″. seems really big. Perhaps I’ll rewrite the sleeve?
I’ve had no problems with the lace, I love lace and the design is clear and matching up just fine.
Thanks so much for this design. I can hardly wait to finish and wear it.

Hiya -
I’ve gotten through the back rib stitches and have just completed the k/p rows leading up to the lace. 2 questions (I’m kind of new at this, so please bear with me). First, what does m1 mean? The abbreviations say m=meter, so I don’t know if that’s a stitch or what. Second, when you say to start the lace pattern beginning with 13th st. (I’m doing the largest size), I should read this first row from r -> l, right? So I’ll start the pattern on the first ‘o’ from the left side, complete the other 3 stitches, then start again from r -> l? Thanks for helping with this - like I said, I’m a newbie, but fell in love with the pattern, so I have to give it a fair shot!
Cheers,
Kimberly

I feel so very stupid. I’ve been following the pattern as it is written in knitty, but I don’t seem to have the long rib section. I work the 10 rows as set, then the lace instructions then adding the rib to take the piece ot hte required length. In my case each piece has a small section of rib then a section of knitting then another small secion of rib. Am i being really thick? Should I just rip out and make it look like whats in the photos?

I finished knitting Arisaig just before Christmas. It is gorgeous - thank you for the pattern.

I’m a bit of a late starter on your Arisaig pattern but am loving it. So far I’ve only done half the back up to the armhole shaping. Do you know if there is/was a Knitalong for this pattern? Would love some motivating…

Question about Arisaig. Working on one of the front panels - if I have deciphered the pattern correctly, I will have 20 stitches left on the needles BEFORE the binding off for the sleeves. The pattern says I will have 20 sts left AFTER the bind off. Can you help me? Thanks!
