18 row pattern repeats will be my downfall

I have a slight obsession with eveness, that knitting seems to bring to the fore. I like certain numbers and hate others. Not necessarily even against odd, but some numbers seem whole while others don’t. Using the wrong numbers even when logic dictates that it makes sense in my knitting always feels like a struggle.

Anyway, enough about that craziness. The problem with my current project is that I hate to stop in the middle of something. It took me until 2.30pm to get dressed today, simply because I’d decided that I was going to finish a repeat or run out of yarn before I’d do anything else. This is not craziness on my part I have decided, it is some great cosmic force struggling for wholeness. I ran out of yarn on the exact last stitch of the pattern repeat. And then I had to get dressed. Now I should probably do some of the other things I’m supposed to be doing today. While this knitting is technically work it isn’t exactly the most pressing thing. And if I started again I’d be knitting another 18 rows. Or at least another 9, because that is half the repeat, a number I like, and has an element of symmetry.

I’d like to put the knitalong blog up later today, but given my current inability to knit less than a block of 1116 stitches at a time I may get sidetracked.

I completely understand where you are coming from!

I can understand exactly where you are coming from. I can’t put my knitting down if in the middle of a row, or pattern repeat. I have to end on a logical note, i think it is easier to pick up the knitting again and carry on as you know exactly where yo are. On the hother hand it may be some weird OCD i have as i find it very difficult to put down a book in the middle of a chapter, unless i’ve fallen asleep reading it.

it’s not totally illogical? you’re less likely to stuff up by repeating the wrong row etc., if you’ve stopped at the end of the pattern repeat. and if you KNOW you’ve stopped on an even row, it’s easier to find where you’re at in the pattern if you do have to stop in the middle of a repeat.

Anyway, you’re on holiday from uni, so getting dressed at 2.30 isn’t really that bad, is it?! hehe. i wish i was still studying, those days of staying in my PJ’s all day were awesome… (i have sloth-like tendencies, and happily admit it).

I’m like that too. Which is OK when I’m knitting something small with a 4 row repeat like my current sock project, but less convenient when knitting a shawl with a 24 row repeat where every row is longer than the last. It does make it easier to work out where you left off though.

Knitting not the most pressing item on your ‘to-do list’ - surely that can’t be true?

I do this too. I think its root is in logic, but really it’s just an excuse to keep knitting. Does help with motivation to finish. When I was on holiday I got so obsessed with finishing a 24 row pattern repeat on a sweater back that I didn’t go out till 6pm. Now I’m home I daren’t start the front.
