Ariel Scarf
Here is the stitch pattern I used for Ariel (published in issue 1 of Yarn Forward, you can see it on the cover) and to make my mum’s scarf.
Each repeat is worked over 10 sts.
Row 1: (ssk, k8, yo)
Row 2: (p1, yo, p7, p2togb)
Row 3: (ssk, k6, yo, k2)
Row 4: (p3, yo, p5, p2togb)
Row 5: (ssk, k4, yo, k4)
Row 6: (p5, yo, p3, p2togb)
Row 7: (ssk, k2, yo, k6)
Row 8: (p7, yo, p1, p2togb)
Row 9: (ssk, yo, k8)
Row 10: (p2tog, p8, yo)
Row 11: (k1, yo, k7, k2tog)
Row 12: (p2tog, p6, yo, p2)
Row 13: (k3, yo, k5, k2tog)
Row 14: (p2tog, p4, yo, p4)
Row 15: (k5, yo, k3, k2tog)
Row 16: (p2tog, p2, yo, p6)
Row 17: (k7, yo, k1, k2tog)
Row 18: (p2tog, yo, p8)
For my mum’s scarf I worked 3 repeats with a single slipped stitch selvage at both sides, so her scarf was 32 sts wide. I used about 100g of HipKnits Aran silk, and 5mm needles. I’ll try and get a photo of the finished scarf soon, although it doesn’t look like I’m going to be able to convince my mum to model it.
Edit: oops! apparently I can’t translate a pattern from the round to flat knitting without forgetting to reverse the wrong side rows. Dear oh dear.
To answer a question asked in the comments about curling. Like all stocking st based patterns this pattern does curl a bit. The bias lacy pattern cuts down on this and blocking will also make a big difference. Yarn choice will also affect how much the scarf curls, you might want to steer clear of yarn with a lot of stretch, or that blocking doesn’t have much effect on.

This scarf looks so gorgeous, another pattern to feed my scarf knitting addiction! I briefly spoke to you last week at SnB at Chai, just to admire your pretty bolero (thanks so much for putting up that pattern too!). Hopefully I’ll get a chance to introduce myself properly to you back at Chai after Xmas.

I hate to break it to you, but all the purl rows in the written version are the wrong way round :(
It works if you start all the purl rows from the end though! Mine’s looking lovely after the false start :)

This pattern is gorgeous - I can’t wait to feed my scarf gifting habit with something new.
Are the even rows corrected now or do we still need to work them backwards?
