twirly socks for xmas
I finished my aunts socks yesterday, not quite on schedule but close enough :) Unfortunately I can’t post them today because next day delivery isn’t available to the town my aunt lives in. Apparently it’s too remote. Stupid Royal Mail. Given the possibility of them getting lost I’m going to wait and post them until next week so that they have to be signed for and are insured. Personally I don’t think hand knit socks are something that can be compensated for in cash but it’s at least less of a risky option. So my aunt won’t get her socks for xmas, but hopefully I will manage to post them eventually.
Seeing as these are done I’ve started another pair of xmas socks! I’m only worried about finishing the first one so that I can fill it as a stocking for my mum. The yarn is a sort of light dk weight and I’m using 3mm needles so I don’t think it will take too long. This swatch is all cabely but I’ll be doing most of the sock in a rib pattern to avoid having to spend every waking hour of the next couple of days knitting.
I knit the swatch in the round and stuck masking tape to it before cutting. Stopped it unraveling perfectly and was a much less awkward method than knitting the swatch flat but only working rs rows and carrying the yarn across the back.

If you like your fairy lights, look out for men in red hats.

Very beautiful socks, your aunt will love them even if she does have to wait a week for them.

And I thought people were meant to sigh when they got a pair of socks for christmas!
I love those socks - I am sure your aunt will love them even more and the wait will be worthwhile. On another note about the Royal Mail/next day delivery - they advertise the service as being “available to 99% of UK addresses”. Personally I think the advert would have been better illustrated if it were “available to approx 80% of the UK as a proportion of land-mass covered”, but it probably wouldn’t sell as well. I bet what they consider to be 1% of addresses is actually the small number of people dotted around in the large amounts of west coast islands/highlands/valleys/peaks.
Happy knitting!
