2 by 2, knits of blue

Continuing with my terribly inefficient but very effective system of knitting everything twice the second Elijah and slipover vesty thing are progressing. The slipover vesty thing will henceforward be known as Arabella since I’ve been reading Jonathon Strange while knitting it (and other things, ’tis a very long book and I read a lot less now I no longer have to). I thought it would be nice to name something after a character from the book, especially as Susanna Clarke was the one that sent Neil Gaiman the link to Coraline.

The lightbox is ace. Anything that results in half decent photographs at 10pm is a wonderful thing, especially as it will soon be just as dark at 6pm. I picked up this lamp thingy from my parent’s house yesterday, an item more commonly used as treatment for SAD.

As my dad’s come up with the much better (but pricier!) treatment of going to Vietnam I figured he wouldn’t miss it. It’s working really well, but as you can see in the photo above it’s really bright. I need to find something brighter than a random IKEA lamp with an energy saving bulb to balance the other side. I’ve been so tired over the last few days, and while I love the aesthetics and accessories of winter I’m already dreading the lack of sunlight. So after taking photos I left the light on in the hope that it might give me more energy, I’m pretty sure it worked for my dad, the flickering effect of my knitting did make me feel almost queasy but so far the crazy bright light hasn’t resulted in the headache I was expecting. We’ll see how this works out, I certainly hope it does because a trip to somewhere sunny = a hell of a lot of knitting patterns!

Looks like a good plan, I hope it helps. Elijah is adorable. Will you be making a pattern available?

Oh, I loove Elijah! So sweet! And I’m so with you on the lack-of-sunlight-horror! Up here in Finland, we have about 2 hours of daylight around Christmas, and it makes me crazy!

You poor thing. I was totally convinced I had SAD in first year uni. My doctor bluntly told me that noone in Australia could/ should get SAD, that it was a disorder for people in Northern Europe and perhaps the problem was more chronic lack of sleep related to the number of nights a week I was going out?

Already while you’re gearing up with the artifical light I’m having to put on a ginormous floppy hat just to hang out the washing. Should be grateful. At least I can sun-dry my washing ;)

Would a reflector on the opposite side from the light do the trick? It’s a little hard to tell from the photo in the entry a few days ago, but you might find that a clean white card (something like what we call Foamcore over here) would reflect enough of the SAD light back onto the other side of your objects. Reflectors are used all the time in photography for things like that.

I’m looking forward to the Elijah pattern. He’s superb!

The lightbox looks like a great idea and one I should really invest in. Half my stuff ends up photographed at night, with a ceiling light and flash to light it. Not good!

Shiny post title. I like the lightbox too.

Oh! I love the name you chose for the vest! I admit though, I have yet to read “Jonathan Strange”, though my sister loves it (I just put a hold on the audio recording at the library; I figure I can listen while I’m knitting/working). :)

Lightboxes are beautiful things, aren’t they? I made one over the summer, and although I prefer to photograph things in natural light, it’ll come in very handy once the really dreary winter weather sets in… :)

Hope you’re having a lovely day!

I have the exact same light box :)

A second to the reflector idea. My sister is a prof. photographer and she has a slightly more fancy set up from yours, but with the same principle. She usually uses two main lights and up to half a dozen reflectors depending on how big a scene she’s focused on.

My brothers and I get SAD- it’s one of the reasons I moved from England to Australia. I’m going to have to buy more of your patterns and send you on that trip now!
