Knit Print

knittinghandsprint.jpg

My postponed printmaking classes have finally started and I’m having so much fun - and longing for a printing press! I made this last week, using a technique called dry point. We drew on zinc with a sharp point and though I had no idea how it was going to turn out I’m quite pleased with it. I’d like to try re-printing this to see if I can get the index fingers a bit lighter, hopefully I’ll be able to try that next time.

Here’s the actual zinc plate I made, since I like to see both sides of something like this.

This week I continued the knitting theme, but my ‘plate’ / piece of card had to be coated in varnish so we didn’t get to print them tonight. I’m really excited to print it next week and see how it turned out.

Where are you doing the class? Is it the art college? It is my dream class at the moment because my brain has decided that printmaking is the way forward!

Neat! You’ll be all set for the next Christmas card exchange. It’s always tricky when making negatives. You have to draw the highlights instead of the shadows.

You are just emphasizing my already strong desire to pursue printmaking! I think I’d love it. I’ve already been coveting the Gocco…

Oh, I love printmaking! This reminds me that I should try to find a local class. I took one in London once that I really enjoyed.

Awesome, especially for your first etching! Have you tried making a collograph? I’ve made some with crocheted lace- they turn out really cool. Perhaps that’s what you’re up to with the varnish?

Oh, that looks so nice! I took printmaking in high school; I miss it so much, but you can’t take any art classes at my college without taking a year-long drawing class first… so knitting will have to remain my creative expression for the time being. But that’s a really lovely drypoint; I can’t wait to see more of the ones you’ve done!

The etching is beautiful, especially for your first! I’m taking a printmaking unit on my course (have a class in a couple hours in fact.) and I love it - etching is probably my favourite technique, we spent the first few months trying all the different kinds.

Is the varnished ‘card plate’ a collograph? Can’t wait to see how it turns out! :) Good luck with future classes! x

How cool is that! Did something similar back in school. Messed it up because I tried to erase something but that didn’t really work out but I remember it being fun…

I did printmaking in highschool (our equivalent of A-level art required you to work in a single area all year. I was the only printmaker in my year). I think it has something in common with knitting, as compared to, say painting, in that you can be creative but you don’t have absolute freedom. You still have to follow certain rules/ processes to get an end result. The joy comes in manipulating and mastering those processes. As compared to painting, where any coloured liquid/ semi solid can be applied to any surface in any way and be a painting.
I loved etching the best, but god it’s deadly! Apparently the life expectancy for full-time printmakers is 50. Because of all the nasty chemicals.

Lovely work on the hands which I think are the hardest part of the human anatomy to draw.

that’s a great print

if you want to get things lighter you can rub off the ink heavily in that area with some scrim before printing, especially if you hae drawn too much in an area, it removes some of the ink from the gooves

I like it the way it is though
