3 Weeks Today

I’ll be on my way here -

So, very, very excited! I’m going to be spending about a week in Montreal and then I’m planning on taking the train to Toronto for another week. I’m already planning on meeting some (I love the details on her latest pattern!) awesome people but I know that I have lots of readers in Canada so if you’re in one of these cities or nearby I’d love to meet you and see your favourite places. This is a little cheeky but if anyone is able to put me up for a night or two so I don’t outstay my welcome with anyone that would be wonderful. My budget for this trip is miniscule but I’d be delighted to cook you a meal or teach some knitting techniques in exchange for a place to rest my head. This is the first time I’ve ever really travelled by myself and I’m really excited about seeing places from the point of view of locals.

Hey Ysolda, I’ve been reading your blog for close to a year now, though I never contributed any comments yet. I live in Montreal, am excited to hear you’re coming! I only have a small 3 1/2 condo (which in Montreal means a one bedroom) but I have a futon in the living room!

You’re coming to Montreal? That’s pretty awesome! Maybe winter will be obliging and actually depart then. Someone should arrange a special knit night where we all bug you by showing off our knits from your patters :P

Have a safe flight.

I’d be happy to put you up but I’m in Ottawa, in between the two cities.

If you’d like to visit Hamilton (about 45 min SW of Toronto) you can stay with me, but all I have to offer is a couch to sleep on :) And I’m sure you’d be more than welcome at my Wednesday knit night too. Please let us know if you’ll be teaching any classes or anything while you’re in Toronto! Or will you be attending the Knitter’s Frolic on the 26-27th?

Hi Ysolda! I’ve been reading your blog and loving your patterns for a few months now, and it would be so neat to meet you… I live close to Toronto, in Guelph, and I bet that there are others like me who would love to meet up with you for supper and/or a knit night some evening… let me know what you think and we can figure out the details!

Hi Ysolda !

I thought maydbe you’d like this LYS… I’ve actually never been to it, didn’t have enough time last time I was in Mtl, but it seems cool ! I also have a list of LYSs, part of it being from the Knitty Coffeeshop, just send me an email if you want it. Have a great time in Canada, and, just so you know, if you’d like to visit Quebec City, I could show you around…I am still pretty much a tourist in the city myself, even after having lived 3 years on the university campus, but I know how to get to the interesting places…

3. Magasin de Fibre L.B.
2270 Mont Royal Est
This is a great store!!! You can pick out any type of yarn, the colour, and the weight, and they make it for you!! The best part is, it’s so cheap!! The women there are really nice, and they will help you decide on a colour and type of yarn if you bring in a pattern. Go there right now!
Directions:
Get off at Mt Royal metro and walk down Mont Royal. Or, take the Parc bus up.

That sounds like a lovely journey. It doesn’t seem like you’ll have any problems finding places to stay. But just in case you find yourself looking for a place to stay I’d like to recommend Couch Surfing (http://www.couchsurfing.org/). I’ve only used it for travelling once, but I have hosted several people who’ve visited my hometown (which unfortunately isn’t even anywhere near Canada) and it’s been all postive experiences.
Good Luck, and Have fun!

When will you be in Toronto? We’ve got a pull-out couch and are within walking distance of 2 yarn stores, and within a quick bus ride of many, many others… but we’re in Tokyo after the 26th of april… let me know.
Am a long time reader and fan.

I live in the heart of downtown Toronto, and would be happy to put you up for a night! Just send me an email and we can talk details.

If you’re in town for a week, you should definitely try to come by the knit-nights at the Purple Purl (tues) and/or Lettuce Knit (wed). Also there is going to be the Knitter’s Frolic (workshops and a huge vendors market) on April 26-27, and if that aligns with your travel plans I’m sure you’d have a blast!

Hi there. I’ve been reading your blog for what seems like forever. It’s such great news that you’re coming to Montreal!
I have an extra guest room and two superstar cats and we would be more than happy to have you bunk here. Email me if you’re interested. I live on the plateau, near Mont-Royal metro and close to downtown and lots of interesting things.

I just visited Montreal a few months back and absolutely loved it there. Be sure to stop by Olive + Gourmando’s in Old Montreal. It’s a husband and wife team who bake delicious breads. They also serve delicious breakfast and lunch.

I haven’t commented much, but I’ve been reading for over a year now. I think I found your blog because of some reference to schooling in Aberdeen (I spent a misguided semester there…). Anyway, now I live in Ottawa, and if you decide to visit here as well, I’d be happy to show you around. What we lack in yarn shops we make up for in charm, I like to think!
If you need to stay at a hostel in Montreal, I highly recommend Le Sous-Bois- it’s right in the heart of the Old Port and has the most adorable gypsy wagon cabins for private rooms.

Hope you have a great trip. I’ve been living in BC for years and still haven’t made it over to that side of the country for a visit. I’m sure you’ll have fun.

Oh! I wish I were able to run up to Montreal for a day and say hello! Just wanted to recommend a hostel I’ve stayed at in Montreal, it was so charming, clean with a huge beautiful common area and kitchen. Very cheap, too!!

That’s great news! I live in Ottawa (about 2 hours from Downtown Montreal) but my boyfriend lives in Montreal. I’ll definitely see if I can get myself there while you’re in town! I would offer you a place to lay your head, but I’m afraid I haven’t any room to speak of… :(

I look forward to hearing about more of your trip! At the moment I’m on a holiday of my own in Antwerp, Belgium, heading back to London on Saturday and spending a week there. Too bad I’m not heading up to your neck of the woods!

All the best!

Oooh! A trip to Canada! Perhaps I’ll borrow the car and stop by Montreal for the get together. I’ll add myself to the list of people in Ottawa that would put you up (useless, but I have to offer). Montreal is a beautiful city. I hope the weather is kind and allows for some walking around Old Montreal.

Yay! That’s great you’ll be in my city (Toronto, that is)! Looks like we’re going to have to arrange a “meet Ysolda” party at this rate! I’d love to meet up, show you around, whatever! It would be fabulous if you were in town for the Knitters Frolic - Amy Singer from Knitty is having her latest book launch (at Lettuce Knit) the same weekend.
You’re realize you’re going to be bombarded with crazy Canadian knitters vying for your attention, right?

We aren’t moving back to Canada until the summer, and then it will be the Ottawa. If you ever come back you are very welcome in my home.

I’m all for Jane’s idea that we set up a special knit night while you’re here! It would be fun to meet you, and fun to meet other knitters in Montreal at the same time (I haven’t lived in Montreal very long so don’t know that many people). Perhaps we could do that at a coffee shop or pub somewhere? or one of the local yarn shops? I’d be happy to help organize that if someone else wants to help …

I’m in Montreal!

What dates are you here? We’ll arrange a knit night for you!

Email me for details!

ps- I’m just off the island of Montreal, but if you need a place to stay, I’m a stay-at-home mom (who runs her own online yarn shop :) who has time and a car!)

Aw Ysolda! I’ve been reading for a while but this is my first comment (along with all the other Canucks, LOL!). I wish I were still in Toronto and able to put you up for a night. As it is, I’m way out west and north and unless you would like to pitch a story to Knitty that you need to interview bison I will likely not see you out this way … my loss! I loved your interview with Emily Johnson, by the way. When I saw her site it reminded me of you (maybe because of the posts with your graddad’s knitting?) so it was cool to see a conversation between you two. Have a great trip, hope you post lots of pictures!

That’s awesome! I’m a bit late to the party, but if you still need a place to stay in Montreal, I would be delighted to have you here! I live in a great and lively neighbourhood that isn’t far from downtown, but still is a tiny bit off the beaten path - it would be a nice opportunity for you to experience a part of the city that very few tourists get to see!

Oh, look - one more perk those Easterners get - a visit from Ysolda! Though if you’re ever on Vancouver Island (British Columbia - go west and then go west some more) considered yourself bed-and-breakfasted.

I loved Toronto when I visited there a couple of years ago - the people there are so friendly.
I would recommend going to see the Group of Seven art work at the Hudson Bay Company Department store - it is a private gallery on the top floor (that is if it is still there).
China town is good too.

Why Canada? Like, I’m just curious, why did you decide to go there rather than anywhere else?

I was in Montreal last August. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you but definitely make the trek up to Mount Royal Park for a fabulous view of the city. I recommend Soup and Noodles (on St. Catharine’s?) for some inexpensive Asian food. Tasty and generous portions. Don’t know if you speak French, but I sensed some resistance to English outside of the touristy areas.

If for some reason you find yourself 4.5 hours south in upstate NY, you’re more than welcome to our spare bedroom. :)

Enjoy!

Awesome! I’m in Montreal, and I would love to meet you. I share a house with six people, so unfortunately, there isn’t really any room to put someone up, but if other Montrealers are getting together for a knit night, count me in!
I also work at a yarn store called MoulinĂ© (moulineyarns.com), you should visit while you’re here!

hi! If you’re looking for a good vegan restaurant in montreal, check out aux vivres on saint laurent, just north of marie-anne. if you’re lucky, you might bump into leonard cohen, since he lives right near there. also, while you’re in TO, you should pop by the knit cafe on queen street west - it’s a fun area to walk around anyways, with a big park nearby (trinity bellwoods) and lots of other cool stores too. have a good trip!

Oh I’m so jealous! I live in the UK but recently spent 6 months in Toronto. The yarn shops there are fantastic and the city is just so friendly and exciting. If you are stuck withough lodgings I can thoroughly recommend the Canadiana Backpackers Hostel (http://www.canadianalodging.com), really clean and cosy and they do pancakes for breakfast! Hope you have a wonderful time.

Hi Ysolda! Ottawa, the capital of Canada, is a two hour bus ride from Montreal. Should you decide to visit, I may be able to offer you a place to stay, although I don’t have a guest room–I live in a one-bedroom apartment.

I hope you have a wonderful trip! Montreal is a very special place.
