Grace Bonney’s introduction begins with a quote from activist Marian Wright Edelman, “You can’t be what you can’t see.” and describes her realisation that the “the majority of women-centred business events, books, and platforms were promoting the same type of woman over and over again.”
It’s a mission statement of sorts for this inspiring coffee table book featuring portraits and interviews with a wonderfully inclusive range of women running all kinds of creative businesses. The book, photography and spaces featured are every bit as beautiful as you’d expect from the founder of Design Sponge, but it’s this diversity that’s had me picking it up constantly. It feels like a book full of friends: from the owner of the restaurant with the best lemonade I’ve ever had, to favourite musicians, to writers whose insight always gives me pause, to an actress who sews her own red carpet outfits, and so many more women I’d never have known about. The interviews are short but full of useful advice, and I’m rather fascinated by the common threads — almost everyone wanted to be a performer as a child, and no one knows the secret to work life balance.
