Fun and highly practical mittens with flip-tops that will keep your fingers toasty warm but allow them to make a quick escape when you need to unlock the door or button your coat. The cable and petal pattern on the cuffs grows into an elegant motif on the back of the hand that invisibly incorporates the necessary shaping for the thumb. Picking up stitches for the flip-tops has the potential to look messy but detailed illustrated instructions are provided for a method that looks virtually seamless. Complete a cute matching set by making the snapdragon tam.

Materials

180yds / 165m light worsted (dk) weight yarn.

Shown in Madelinetosh Worsted (100% superwash merino, 225yds / 206m, 3.52 /100g) in Gilded.

Size 6 US / 4mm dpns

Scrap yarn for holding sts

Gauge

20 sts and 28 rnds = 4” / 10cm in st st

Sizes

The mittens are very stretchy, particularly at the cuffs and should easily fit hands measuring 7-8.5” / 18-22cm around knuckles. The length can be simply adjusted to fit and where to do this is indicated in the pattern.
