Yarn

Approx 1110 [1170, 1230, 1290, 1350, 1410] yards / 1015 [1070, 1125, 1180, 1235, 1345] metres of double knitting or light worsted weight yarn. I recommend using a smooth yarn in either wool or a wool and cotton blend. The pattern involves quite a bit of shaping, which really needs a yarn with at least some stretch to work best.

Needles and notions

US size 6 / 4mm (or size needed to obtain gauge) circular needle, 32” / 80 cm or longer.

US size 5 / 3.75 mm circular needle, 32” / 80 cm or longer.

US size 6 / 4mm, 12”/30 cm needle for your preferred method of working small circumferences in the rnd.

8 buttons, about 5/8” / 15mm in diameter.

About 3 yards / metres of ribbon. Different ribbon widths will give different effects. I used a ribbon made from vintage Liberty print cotton lawn.

Yarn needle and at least 4 stitch markers.

Gauge

Using size 6 / 4mm needles: 21 sts and 28 rows = 4”/ 10cm in stocking stitch.
