Join us in the Knitwork and discover the joys and challenges of knitting colourwork! If you have been looking longingly at colourwork projects and not knowing how to start, then this online knitting course is for you. Learn all the skills you need to knit your first colourwork project and tackle the next one (and the next!) with confidence.
The Stranded Colourwork Basics course is a 4 week self-guided online knitting course, with continued access to the course so that you can return to each chapter for a refresher, again and again, whenever you need. The course is comprised of short, easy to digest videos and photo tutorials as well as a discussion group to ask questions and share your achievements with other knitters. This colourwork course also includes a complimentary copy of the Tyrie Hat pattern, which was designed to be the ideal starting point for those wishing to learn colourwork knitting.
We’ll begin by learning exactly what Stranded Colourwork is, how to follow a colourwork chart and practice managing knitting with two colours at the same time on a swatch. Using the Tyrie Hat as our principal guide project, we will then embark on our journey together into the magical world of colourwork knitting! The course will allow you to explore how to choose the right colours and yarn, as well as how colour dominance works in a pattern. We will then focus on managing tension, shaping in colourwork and how to hold multiple colours together without getting in a tangle and being left with too many ends.
By the end, you will have completed a hat pattern using stranded colourwork and have acquired the skills and techniques you need to take on your next colourwork project with confidence!

The Stranded Colourwork Basics course includes our beautiful Tyrie Hat pattern, designed by Ysolda specifically as a way to introduce knitters to the joys of colourwork.
Tyrie Hat
This is a fun project that wants you to explore the joys of colour! We designed the pattern to be perfect for mix and matching yarn - so that you can make 2 or even 3 coordinating hats from the same kit. Or, if you are feeling really adventurous, why not try using up some scraps for a truly unique result? We knit up our sample using Stranded Dyeworks BFL DK, who have created the dreamiest Spring and Autumn palettes in kit form for this hat.
If you have always wanted to learn colourwork but were looking for a bit of extra guidance, then this is the perfect introduction. Each chapter will work on growing your skills, gradually building on each week as we go. The course is also designed to be useful for those with previous experience of stranded colourwork, who are looking to grow confidence in their skills in order to move on to more complex projects.
If you are a newer knitter we recommend mastering the following skills before joining us: knitting and purling, knitting in the round, maintaining an even tension and basic increases and decreases.
The course is hosted on the Knitwork. You're welcome to participate in the discussion group as much, or as little, as feels right to you. Whatever your skill level, your contributions are welcome, and if you have a question there's almost certainly someone else wondering the same thing who is too shy to ask.
The Stranded Colourwork Basics course is designed to be a four week course with each week focusing on a new skill and pattern to try. Of course, we all knit at different paces and have different amounts of time available to work on our projects. You can learn at your own pace: your purchase includes continued access to all course content.
You can purchase the course directly in the Knitwork using the browser, or using the iPhone or iPad app, and navigating to courses using the main menu. From there you can purchase the course directly within the Knitwork and will have instant access as soon as you've completed payment.
