Also sometimes called sock weight this is a versatile category. Garments are lightweight and wearable, with enough stitches to allow for precise shaping. Worked on larger needles these yarns create flowing shawls and provide a gentler introduction to lace patterning than finer laceweight yarns.
Lofty traditional wools, such as Jamieson and Smith jumper weight, fit into this category but are usually worked in stranded colourwork on slightly larger needles to allow the fibre to bloom into a cohesive fabric that's not too dense.
