Our Sika pattern is a great alternative to thrummed mittens and can be hung by the door on a handy loop after those thrilling snowball fights.
Beginning with an I-cord cast on, these thick, double layered mittens are an extremely satisfying project for a knitter at any stage. These mittens make use of stranded colourwork techniques using super chunky yarn to emulate the look of traditional thrummed mittens without the loose fibre. At the end, the extra I-cord tail is sewn into a loop. The loop makes it easy to hang them to dry after playing in the snow, or join them with a cord to increase the odds of still having a pair at the end of winter.

Stay cosy in the cold
The mittens are thick and double layered, as the contrast colour strands from the previous row are pulled up and knit together with the live stitches to create a woven lattice. This second layer provides extra insulation and creates a beautifully symmetrical diamond shaped pattern which appears on the outside as contrast colour dots. These dots cover the mittens, creating the impression of snowflakes or tiny hearts. The tip of the mittens and thumbs is completed with a festive snowflake motif.
Though not originally native to the UK, Sika deer were introduced in 1860 and the population is now found predominantly in Scotland. Much like our mittens, Sika deer are made distinctive by their white spots which was how Ysolda came to spot one whilst out walking with her family during the summer months when this coat is most visible. She learned that Sika are the deer species most able to survive and maintain their body condition in the winter months. Whilst we may lack this natural adaptation, the Sika mittens will provide you with the warmth for endless frosty meanderings and countless snowball fights.
