Cruden

A traditional Fair Isle vest worked from the bottom up entirely in the round. The colourwork is simple but effective alternating a smaller and larger motif, the larger of which is offset on alternate repeats.

Size 3 US / 3.25mm 24" / 60cm circular

Regular and tall sizes with a finished chest circumference of 32(35¼, 38½, 41½) [44¾, 48, 51¼] (54½, 57½)"
Shown in size 35¼ with no ease.

  • CONSTRUCTION

The neck and armholes are steeked and the front shoulders are worked slightly longer than the back to both drop the back neckline for a better fit and to allow the stitch patterns to flow over the shoulder. Detailed instructions for finishing the steeks with crochet are provided. After cutting the steeks open stitches are picked up around the armholes and neck and ribbed bands are worked in one of the contrast colours for a slightly sporty detail.

    OTHER SUPPLIES

    Size US C-D / 3mm crochet hook

For larger sizes you may find it more comfortable to use a longer circular for the body up to the underarms. Working the armhole ribbing may require additional needles in the smaller size depending on whether you prefer to work small circumferences on magic loop, dpns or two circulars.

  • Directions for reinforcing the steeks with crochet are provided. This method requires a relatively ‘sticky’ wool that has not been superwash treated.

The colourwork is simple but effective alternating a smaller and larger motif, the larger of which is offset on alternate repeats. Seven colours are used to shade the patterns but the number used can be varied. A colour in chart and quick reference palette are included for planning your own combinations, I recommend using a more vibrant or unexpected colour at the centre of the larger motifs.
