Beautiful Projects – Colourwork mods

September 01, 2015

This week I got a little obsessed with some of the incredible colourwork projects people are making. Figuring out the combination and placement of colours is the fun part of a project for me, and so I’m totally in awe of those of you who go a step further, and modify the colourwork motif too. Here are some of my favourites –

This might be one of my most favourite knitted projects, ever. Martha knit her sweater, based on Chickadee, but with canoes using her own handspun yarn and handcrafted paddle buttons. I just love everything about it, and you can read more about the story of the yarn on her project page here – marthabrum’s Handspun Canoe Sweater.

First up is pSTATqueen’s wee Bikeadee, based on Ysolda’s wee Chickadee pattern. The bike motif works so well, and ah – little bike buttons!

Ysolda’s Little Birds pattern from Twist Collective has been the basis for some amazingly creative knits, which I’ll focus on another time. These mitts though knit by Amy Mercer are one of my favourites. Amy has helpfully added some notes on her project page in case you feel like creating a pair of your own. Have a look here – SpicyJellybean’s Little Blue Bird Mitts.

I love this subtle change, a Hendreary hat with gears instead of buttons. The colours are just perfect too, and there’s more details about her mods on her project page here – jemmyface’s Gear Head.

And finally, another Little Birds cardigan, only with hedgehogs! This really is a work of art, knit by Indu who says that it’s the knit she’s most proud of, and one that her sister was hoping wouldn’t fit her so she could have it instead. Luckily it all worked out! There are lots more details and notes on her project page here – nextthursday’s pike silt.
